Our first Nigerian Dwarf was purchased in 1999 – because she was “cute”!
Now we breed for conformation and milk production, and sometimes they are even what we call “cute”!
Hymnotes Farm is located east of the village of Capac in the “thumb” of the “mitten” in the Great Lake State of Michigan.

Maria's Astounding Arioso

Hymnotes Farm welcomed “Maria’s Astounding Arioso ” into the herd on March 2, 2010 @ 7:30 PM.
Maria has usually astounded us with the number of mulitples she has given birth to – 21 kids so far!
This time she astounded us by only giving birth to 1 kid.
I have Astounding in the house and am bottle feeding her.
She had a most interesting entry into the world – upside down breech delivery!
Twas a puzzlement!
Most breech presentations are back legs with the dewclaws up.
Astounding was back legs with dewclaws down.
At first I thought her front legs were presenting with the head back which usually indicates a still birth.
I checked the 2nd joint of the presented legs and knew she was belly side up – not good.
I tried to push her back in – that did not work, so I pulled her out as far as she would come, and very quickly worked out the front legs and shoulders one at a time; then I quickly turned her body and head to belly side down so the head could come out of the birth canal before she drowned in birthing fluids.
Breech presentations need to be delivered very quickly.
Once the umbilical cord is severed, the kid is deprived of oxygen, will try to breathe, and can die very quickly.

Hymnotes Farm Contralto delivered her twins on March 23, 2010 @ 4:15 PM.
She had 1 doe kid (on the left in pic) and 1 buck kid (on the right in pic).
Our line of Nigerian Dwarfs usually have their babies 6 to 10 days before their due date.

THREE TIMES THREE = NINE!

Hymnotes Farm welcomed its third set of triplets into the world on March 25, 2010.
Thoublemaker: a nigerian dwarf doe, delivered the trio with no trouble at all.
The two black kids are bucks, the gold kid is a doe.
